Manannah-Valley truly is a family affair. The operation, located near Manannah, Minnesota involves Bernie and Aggie Schmitz, along with their son John, his wife Julie, and their children Jolene and Joel. They also receive help during the show season from John and Julie's oldest daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Bret Butterfass. Cory Salzl and Rochelle Berg also assist with chores around the farm.
John and Julie milk around 30 cows with a BAA of 107.2 and a RHA of 20,000. They farm on 80 acres of land, harvesting alfalfa, corn and oats.
The Schmitz family has been incredibly active at all levels of the Holstein Association and Red & White Dairy Cattle Association. John is a National board member and Breed Activities Chair of the National Red & White Association. Bernie served on the county board for a number of years and is a retired State Board member. He was presented with the Distinguished Service Award from the Minnesota Holstein Association this year. A recent accomplishment for Manannah-Valley includes having the First Jr. All-American Fall Yearling in Milk in the RWDCA at Expo this year with Mystic Rose-Red. Among other recent accomplishments was Bernie and Aggie's 2009 Distinguished Breeder Award given by the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association for their Red & White achievements. "We enjoy being involved with good cattle and enjoy the people we know through the associations."
